چکیده
Sensitivity analysis is an important tool for describing power system dynamic behavior in response to parameter variations. It is a central component in preventive and corrective control applications. The existing approaches for sensitivity calculations, namely, finite-difference and forward sensitivity analysis, require a computational effort that increases linearly with the number of sensitivity parameters. In this work, we investigate, implement, and test a discrete adjoint sensitivity approach whose computational effort is effectively independent of the number of sensitivity parameters. The proposed approach is highly efficient for calculating sensitivities of larger systems and is consistent, within machine precision, with the function whose sensitivity we are seeking. This is an essential feature for use in optimization applications. Moreover, our approach includes a consistent treatment of systems with switching, such as DC exciters, by deriving and implementing the adjoint jump conditions that arise from state and time-dependent discontinuities. The accuracy and the computational efficiency of the proposed approach are demonstrated in comparison with the forward sensitivity analysis approach.

The independent set perturbation adjoint method: A new method of differentiating meshbased fluids models
A new scheme for differentiating complex mesh-based numerical models (e.g. finite element models), the Independent Set Perturbation Adjoint method (ISP-Adjoint), is presented. Differentiation of the matrices and source terms making up the discrete forward model is realized by a graph colouring approach (forming independent sets of variables) combined with a perturbation method to obtain gradien...
متن کاملThe Independent Set Perturbation Adjoint Method Applied To a Finite Element Shallow Water Equation Model
An adjoint model for a 2D finite element Galerkin shallow water model is developed using the Independent Set Perturbation Adjoint method (ISP-Adjoint, [33]). Its performance in a full 4-D VAR setup with a limited area is assessed by comparing with the adjoint model derived by the automatic differentiation approach, where it is used for optimising the initial conditions. It is shown that ISP-Adj...

The spherical harmonics discrete ordinate method for plane-parallel data assimilation (SHDOMPPDA) model is an unpolarized plane-parallel radiative transfer forward model, with corresponding tangent linear and adjoint models, suitable for use in assimilating cloudy sky visible and infrared radiances. It is derived from the spherical harmonics discrete ordinate method plane-parallel (SHDOMPP, als...
متن کاملOn Consistency Properties of Discrete Adjoint Linear Multistep Methods
In this paper we analyze the consistency properties of discrete adjoints of linear multistep methods. Discrete adjoints are very popular in optimization and control since they can be constructed automatically by reverse mode automatic differentiation. The consistency analysis reveals that the discrete linear multistep adjoints are, in general, inconsistent approximations of the adjoint ODE solu...
متن کاملOn the adaptive solution of space-time inverse problems with the adjoint method
Adaptivity in space and time is ubiquitous in modern numerical simulations. The large number of unknowns associated with today’s typical inverse problem may run in the millions, or more. To capture small scale phenomena in regions of interest, adaptive mesh and temporal step refinements are required, since uniform refinements quickly make the problem computationally intractable. To date, there ...
